Abstract

By die karakters in Die rugkant van die bruid kom daar naamlik vanwe die aard van die karakter(s) se verteltrant 地 groot mate van afgetrokkenheid voor wat eerder as verslagdoening, of selfs as 地 soort 礎innegesprek, oorkom met die leser as buitestaander wat die situasie objektief waarneem.

ENGLISH : Part one of this dissertation comprises a practical component of a selection of poems by the author, Eunice Basson, which was presented in a class or workshop situation for discussion and suggestions over a period of three years.

Part two entails a mini-dissertation in which selected short stories by the South African writer, Rachelle Greeff, are discussed in view of certain arguments and research enquiry. The titles of the abovementioned two collections of short stories are strongly suggestive and indicate a certain tension, even the possible rejection of the female by the 双ther party (the male as partner, or as marriage partner or as aggressor). These titles also allude to a certain quest for identity, even vulnerability, but also to the ability of women with regard to the emotional, the conventional, the physical/sexual, the psychological, and the often abusive situations to which they are exposed in complex relationships. The primary research objective of this dissertation is to investigate the various ways in which the writer portrays the female as character/figure in selected short stories. The different ways in which women are represented are also looked at, as well as the manner in which the different phases in their life world are precipitated in these stories. Attention is also given to the different roles played by a woman during her life time. The possible role of stereotyping in these stories is also investigated.

It also seems as if the characterisation of women is treated differently in each of these two collections. In the narrative of some of the characters in Die rugkant van die bruid, a greater sense of detachment is experienced due to their curt reportage, or even an internal conversational tone, leaving the reader as an outsider who looks upon the situation objectively. On the other hand, the characters in Merke van die nag tend to kindle a subjective feeling of sympathy with the reader in their sense of loss, which the writer portrays with immense insight and understanding.
